An Unknown Writer
I obtained these pages of notes dated January 10, 1957. I don't know who typed them up. It is a hodge podge of good information/history. I am transcribing as written.

W. A. Conger was first on Tornowski farm. Dr. Cassingham's first office was in the Conger house in 1870. Then he moved to the one residence in Bungtown. The house and one store was just north of Mrs. Ida Bleich's present house and there was a flax and corn room across the road (east) from the residence and store. When this residence was moved in 1871 or 1872 to just north of the hotel in Roberts he lived in it until it was moved to Thawville a year or two later.
George H. Thompson and Dolittle put up the store in Bungtown also flaxseed and corn room.
In 1871, George H. Thompson and George Lyman built a hardware store where Russell's implement building is now. William Thompson a brother of George built a drugstore adjoining to the south. W. B. Flora and Newman put up a general store where Whorrall's restaurant is facing west in 1871. In 1873 fire destroyed the Thompson and Lyman hardware and the Wm. Thompson drug store. George Thompson and George Lyman built their new hardware store where the Tarvin store now stands (Tenjus Havener.) Wm. Thompson built his new store where the present drug store is.
Lyman Township was named after Samuel Lyman its first settler. His house was said to be the only one between Del Ray and Oliver's Grove. Lyman Township was almost completely settled between 1860 and 1870. The present Catholic Church was first the German Methodist. (Built in 1873. Sold to Catholic 1886 --Cost 2400) It was built by Grube and Son. They were the first Germans here. They also built the house where Frank Mosher lived (Jim White house) and lived there. George Thompson built the Mae Roberts house. Bayler Blackely built the house where Henry Onken lived in Roberts (now Lily Parkin.) It was built on the Ed. Hornickle farm and was moved several times.
Seth Woodwars (Woodward?) was first on the Zarbuck 80 acres now owned by Seward Arnold. Pecks built and lived in a house about 1/2 mile north of Louis Chambers 80. Now Walter Flessner. Peck boys built the Steinman house (Ralph Gullett) C. S. Peirce lived in a house on east end of Onken farm. (1869). Peter Gose lived first on Sam Netherton farm later on Tobe Gimbel farm (Harley Day). He was a brother in law of Mrs. John Hummel. A. B. Graham was first to live on the farm now occupied by Joe Sans and built a beautiful home there. J. B. Jones was the first man to live where Roy Stiner lives now (John Otto farm.)
J. B. Meserve built the elevator in N. E. part of town now known as (Roberts & Gullett elevator) He also built a flax seed and corn room where the lumber yard is now. That building is the house that Carl Webers live in now (Anderson & Kenward). Tom Mcnish & son built a harness and shoe shop where Breedens store is now. The son Tom was killed by a sky rocket in 1892. R. B. Chambers came here in 1874. He first clerked for Anderson short time later built a store where the bank is now.
Tinkerpaugh & King put up a wagon shop east of the Ortlepp building. King lived on the farm where George Fuoss lives (now Paul Stamm)
Iowan Bros built the first blacksmith shop just west of Kiefs poultry house. They invented and patented the Iowan post hole auger.
Sam Tapp then run the shop for 5 years. Then clerked for R. B. Chambers (his brother-in-law) 2 years then blacksmithed for 7 more years. Then ran the creamery for Chambers for the rest of his life. Frank Butler lived whre Frank Fouss lives (Dale Whitson sec 12). He was a mason and carpenter and built the house where John Christofferson lives.
Chris Anderson came here in 1866. Settled on what is now known as the Ortlepp farm (Henry Garrelts now) He lived on farm a short time then he and John Montelious built was is known as Chambers store 1871 and he operated it before going into the bank. Ford Co. was organized in 1859 and was the last in state. This was called Brenton Twp. at first then was divided and the south part was named Lyman after its first settler. A. A. Haling lived on the Milo Higgins farm. A. M. Haling lived on Louis Steigman farm (Paddock farm) Halings came to Roberts in 1866 and bought all of sec 2 (1240) acres. Sold some of it to other settlers. A. M. also owned considerable acreage in and around Beset Grove. In 1877 Mosher bought A. A. Halings farm and Paddock (Dick) bought the A. M. Haling farm where Louis Steigman lived later.
The Congregational Church was made in 1879. Fred Petitt built the original hotel (called the Glencoe House). The Methodist Church was built in 1882 cost $2800. Burned Christmas Eve 1902. Cost of new church $11,000. Bill Bond and Wm. Hahn bought wagon shop of D. Walker 1891. J. B. Meserve built the the Anderson bank corner building.
The first gathering or picnic here was held in Beset Grove on July 4, 1859. The night before the corn was all killed by frost. Lyman Twp. was formed in 1867. Birdsley lived on the the Ihler farm and ran a blacksmith shop there. T. A. Ireland lived on Anderson half section (Bailey now) E. Schafer lived on Mrs. J. Russell farm.
Sam Lyman had three sons. George, Ed, Burt. He left here for Onarga and after she died he moved to Paxton to live with his son Burt who was sheriff. Ed married a Harding girl and they lived where Ed Kietzman now lives (Fencken Farm). The had one son Dean and they moved to California in 1895. Limuel Harding was a partner of W. C. Wright in the lumbar business here. The grove on the Carter place was called Gilks Grove. G. S. Hersperger was first on the Zick farm and had a blacksmith shop there. E. B. Beighle came in 1869. O. D. Sackett settled on the farm where Fred Sturm lived for years (Now Harry Fairley) in 1868 left for Paxton 1884. The Roberts fire was August 31, 1894. The Anderson and Kenward tile factory was discontinued in 1913. The water tower in Roberts was put up in 1906. The first tile factory was built by Chris Anderson in 1883 and was located just west of the cemetery. The next tile factory was built by Anderson and Kenward in 1886.
Halings bought their land in 1866.

First teacher was Mrs. Marston. She taught in her own home.
Ed Collins was a harness maker in Melvin married Martha Shute daughter of Sam Shute. John Shute came to Melvin in 1867.

The first school house in Lyman was built in 1868 on S.E. corner of sec. 16 in 1872 it was moved to near the center of Roberts. First teacher was W. W. Graham son of W. B. Graham who lived on farm where Joe Sans lived. The big square school house was built in 1884 where Gene Beland lives now.
The hard road was built thru Thawville in 1927. The railroad was built thru Sibley in 1873. The railroad (T.P. & W. was built thru Piper in 1857. Mike Sullivan came to what is now Sibley in 1867.
Fred Pettitt built the hotel in Roberts. The Pettit lived in the Shute House near Melvin. William Newman occupied the hotel from 1874 to 1884 called the Newman House. Charlie Hazen was probable the next owner called it (Glencoe House) Hancock called it (Magnolia House) Wilson ran it at one time.
